Journalist Frank Simonds built the gambrel-roofed main house in 1916. To complement the tome-jammed bookshelves, guest rooms are named for famous authors; many have fireplaces. The nicest of the rooms, with 12 windows that look out over the Presidential Range, is a tribute to Robert Frost. Two additional buildings—the carriage house and the chimney house—also have libraries. The menu in the candlelit dining room ($$-$$$$; reservations essential) might include roasted rack of lamb with minted onion marmalade, pistachio-encrusted salmon, or a medley of young duckling prepared three ways. The inn is also home to the White Mountain Cooking School, and overnight packages with cooking classes are available. You can hike easily up to beautiful Foss Mountain, directly from the inn. Pros: adorable property; fine dining. Cons: on the pricier side.
