Cannon Mountain. Serviced by the first aerial tramway in North America, which was built in 1938, this classic New England ski resort inside Franconia Notch State Park offers terrain that runs the gamut from steep pitches off the peak to gentle blue cruisers. Beginners may want to head over to the separate Tuckerbrook family area, which offers 13 trails and four lifts. Adventurous types will want to try out the Mittersill area, which has 86 acres of lift-accessed “side country” trails and glades where the snow is au naturel.
