Just 12 mi from the Canadian border, this tiny community is known for two things. One is the Balsams, one of New Hampshire's oldest and most celebrated resorts. The other is the fact that Dixville Notch and another New Hampshire community, Hart's Location, are the first election districts in the nation to vote in presidential general elections. When the 30 or so Dixville Notch voters file into the little Balsams meeting room on the eve of election day and cast their ballots at the stroke of midnight, they invariably make national news.
