The Governor's House Review

Among Portsmouth's inns and small hotels, the Governor stands apart. Small, lavish, and quiet, this four-room B&B, a couple of blocks from the historic downtown area, is the perfect place for discerning couples. It was the home of Charles Dale, formerly the governor of New Hampshire, from 1930 to 1964. Frette linens made in Italy, down comforters, in-room Bose CD stereos with 300 CDs to choose from, high-speed Wi-Fi, a guest computer, in-room massages, complimentary wine, DVDs that include the last 60 Academy Award winners for Best Picture, and a deluxe Continental breakfast are among the extras at this 1917 Georgian Colonial. Ask innkeeper Bob Chaffee about the hand-painted bathroom tiles. Coffee, tea, and hot cocoa are available 24 hours a day.
