Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail. Important sites of African-American history are along the self-guided walk on the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail. Included are the New Hampshire Gazette Printing Office, where skilled slave Primus Fowle operated the paper's printing press for some 50 years beginning in 1756, and the city's 1866 Election Hall, outside of which the city's black citizens held annual celebrations of the Emancipation Proclamation.
