Durham

A lively college town settled in 1635, and later the home of Revolutionary War hero and three-time New Hampshire governor John Sullivan, Durham became a maritime hub in the 19th century thanks to its easy access to Great Bay via the Oyster River. With the University of New Hampshire anchoring its town center, it's a good hub for exploring two other nearby riverfront communities with thriving historic downtowns, Dover and Newmarket.
