Portsmouth's newest property (it opened summer 2006) one-ups the nearby Sheraton for location and contemporary room standards, making it the business traveler's top choice in town. All rooms have small refrigerators and microwaves, big TVs, desk with ergonomic Herman Miller chairs, great linens, and contemporary furnishings with warm colors. The lobby is bright and social, with a welcoming two-sided fireplace topped with a flat-screen tuned to CNN, and free cookies at the counter. To the side is the Great American Grill, which makes for convenient noshing. The hotel is on the edge of downtown, walkable to all things in the heart of town. There's also a decent fitness center and an indoor pool and hot tub. Pros: great rooms, kids under 18 free; free 24-hour business center. Cons: chain hotel doesn't feel part of historic Portsmouth, pricey in summer.
