Governor's House

Fodor's Review:

Of Portsmouth's inns and small hotels, the Governor stands apart. Small, plush, and quiet, this four-room inn, a couple blocks from the historic downtown area, is the perfect place for discerning couples. It was the home of Charles Dale, formerly the governor of New Hampshire, from 1930 to 1964. Frette linens, down comforters, in-room Bose CD stereos with 300 CDs to choose from, high-speed wireless, a guest computer, in-room massages, complimentary wine, a private tennis court, as well as DVDs that include collection featuring the last 55 Academy Award winners are among the extras at this 1917 Georgian Colonial house turned bed-and-breakfast. Innkeeper Bob Chaffee is a discerning host. Ask him to tell the history of the hand-painted bathroom tiles. Pros: great rooms and home, free bicycle rental, great location. Cons: king beds, most showers are small.
