The arrival of the railroad in 1848 turned the sleepy hamlet of Laconia—then called Meredith Bridge—into the Lakes Region's chief manufacturing hub. Even today it acts as the area's supply depot, a perfect role given its accessibility to both Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee lakes, as well as to Interstate 93. In June the town draws bikers from around the world for Laconia Motorcycle Week.
