The Manor on Golden Pond

31 Manor Rd., off Shepard Hill Rd., Holderness, New Hampshire, 03245, USA

A name like this is a lot to live up to, but the Manor succeeds: it's the Lakes Region's most charming inn. The house sits on a slight rise overlooking Squam Lake, and the grounds comprise 15 acres of towering pines and hardwood trees. Stroll down to the beach for a dip in the lake or to take a canoe for a paddle, or just relax on the lawn in one of the Adirondack chairs, taking in the lake views. Back in the stately inn, owners Brian and Mary Ellen Shields ensure comfort. The rooms, most with wood-burning fireplaces and more than half with double whirlpool tubs, have a British country theme. Canopy beds, vintage blanket chests, and tartan fabrics fill the sumptuous bedchambers. The restaurant is terrific, and the Three Cock Pub is endearing. There's a small spa, and afternoon tea is served in the library.
