If you're in town for a Dartmouth event, you'll want to stay on the college's—and the town's—main square. This sprawling Georgian-style brick structure rises five white-trimmed stories. The original building was converted into a tavern in 1780, and this expertly run inn, now greatly enlarged, has been operating ever since. The updated rooms reflect more of an urban flair. Plaid wing chairs mix with soft leather sofas and contemporary art and furnishings. Two on-site restaurants open for breakfast and dinner.
