Nobhill Tavern

Nobhill Tavern Review

San Francisco cuisine is the star at Michael Mina's handsome, understated brasserie with clean lines and polished-wood floors. Emphasis here is on seasonal, globally inspired favorites. Menu items might include caramelized-puree of celeriac soup with toasted walnuts, lobster potpie (containing a huge 2-pound Maine lobster and baby vegetables in truffle cream), and bacon-wrapped scallops with lentil stew and baby carrots. A selection of five flavors of mashed potatoes, such as lobster, curry, or basil, is included with dinner, and you can bet the sourdough bread's the real deal. Put simply, there are no weak spots in Mina's repertoire.

When we walked into Nobhill, my noticed the little alcove booths next to the bar. They were almost like private dining rooms. We requested one and after a few minutes, they relocated us. It was a nice and classy touch. On top of our appetizers of oysters and a salad, we ordered the Lobster Pot Pie to share. There was no looking down the nose on that request either. The Pot Pie was brought to our table and divided up. And I can't say enough about it. It is a Pot Pie but it never, ever forgets that the lobster is the star here. We had a delightful planned experience.

Which leads to two nights later, we had reservations at a storied chef's Michelin starred location next door. We had mad reservations weeks ahead and requested one of their small tables. No problem we told on the phone but the hostess refused to honor our request, even though the place had nobody a half hour after they opened. Those are only for large parties we were told (although 4 would have been the most). We opted out and went to Nobhill again. Can we get in??? Sure. Can we get one of those alcove booths? Sure. And no reservations this time. Their neighbor could learn something about front of the house from this place. I had the short ribs over grits on this visit. Very different and very yum.

In short, Nobhill has the WOW factor. They do everything right and are worth a visit or two or three. And I don't know if the French rubber company has given them any stars but they certainly get several of mine.

I'm sorry to read that SummerLuck had no luck at Nobhill. We ate there about four years ago and had a terrific meal. It was there that we had our first wine pairing dinner, a six-course sumptuous experience. (We passed on the seven-course version that included the lobster pot pie Enough is enough, after all.) The food was beautifully and artistically presented and absolutely delicious as well. The wine pairings were fantastic, and with each new course the sommelier came by to explain why he had chosen that particular wine. We were there very late in the evening, so the atmosphere was a bit hushed, but the setting was plush and lovely. Of course it wasn't a cheap meal, but we thought it was well worth it!

Do not go to Nob Hill if you now what is good for you. I had their "signature" dish the lobster pot pie, and I was up all night in the bathroom vomiting, as well as severe diahrrea for the next 2 days. For a whole day I was in bed, because I was dizzy, could not move, and sick to my stomach. I missed out on a whole day in Las Vegas because of their disgusting food. When I called the manager, he did not help at all and kept denying the fact that it was his dish that caused me to be sick. If you want to waste 2 days in bed in Las Vegas than go to this restaurant, if you are sensible at all stay clear.
