The Mirage rang in the modern era of Las Vegas, but then started to look a little too "1989". So MGM Mirage gave the casino and restaurants an end-to-end makeover, all timed to the mid-2006 opening of Cirque du Soleil's Beatles-theme show. Even the campy exploding volcano received some souped-up special effects. The resort's centerpiece is still the glass dome inside the front entrance, spanning a lush rain forest of palm trees, cascading waterfalls, meandering lagoons, and exotic tropical flora. On the casino side the foliage gives way to an atmospheric lounge that's part of the popular Chicago-based eatery Japonais, one of a handful of excellent restaurants that have opened here since 2005, vastly improving the dining scene. A huge aquarium buzzing with leopard sharks, puffer fish, and about 90 other species makes for a stunning backdrop to the front desk. There is also a new lobby bar for those who want to contemplate the fish over a cold one.
