Horses are permitted on many trails within the parks; check for seasonal exceptions. Horseback riding is prohibited on paved roads. You can pick up a brochure about suggested routes and outfitters from any visitor center or entrance station. The Sperry Chalet Trail to the view of Sperry Glacier above Lake McDonald is a tough 7-mi climb.
Glacier Gateway Outfitters offers one-hour or full-day rides in the Two Medicine area with a Blackfeet cowboy as your guide. Rides begin across the road from Glacier Park Lodge and climb through aspen groves to high-country views of Dancing Lady and Bison mountains. You can enjoy a rodeo every Tuesday evening. All riders must be older than seven. Walk-ins are welcome, or reservations are handled through Glacier Park, Inc. (406/892-2525). Swan Mountain Outfitters have corrals at Apgar, Lake McDonald, and Many Glacier. Trips range from one hour to all day, and can accommodate most riding levels. Children must be at least seven years old to ride on the west side, and eight to ride from Many Glacier. No riders over 250 pounds are allowed. Reservations are essential.
