Fodor's Review:

This nationally-recognized, family-owned restaurant has been a local treasure since the 1950s. It's known for impressive service, and here guests can dine among the elite and enjoy superb Italian dishes, prime steaks, and a mind-boggling wine list ranging from a $20 chardonnay to a $500 cabernet.

A regular for more than forty years, and still the best in St Louis, and one of the best in the country.

A magical evening in the city

Posted by AYW from St. Louis, MO on 7/27/08
My parents were in town from Kansas City and they had heard from their friends that Tony’s is a great restaurant in St. Louis. After living in St. Louis for 15 years, I had yet to take the plunge. Tony’s reputation is that of a special occasion destination. My parents and my husband and I were celebrating wedding anniversaries this month so we figured we should give it a go. After reading other reviews, I was afraid the atmosphere would be stuffy and the staff pretentious. Nothing could be further from the truth! It was just as we would have hoped. Smiles all around. We were made to feel welcome the moment we pull up to the front of the unassuming entrance and were greeted by the valet. (Parking is free by the way.) Our waiter was Carlos V. He was one of the younger waiters and has been with the restaurant only 5 years. Right away he set the appropriate tone for our table. Personable, accommodating, appreciative of our business, warm and fun. He and his team were VERY knowledgeable about the food and wine. We never felt rushed, nor did we want for anything. Vince Bommarito and Vince Jr. came by each table to say hello and check on everyone. My husband and I had the Chef’s Tasting Menu for Two (with wine) for $210. A great way to go if you’d like to sample various dishes. We give high marks for the Smoked Salmon with Mascarpone cheese, the Penne Pasta with Lobster and Shrimp, and the Foie Gras. My parents had Tartare of Beef (prepared tableside) salads, risotto, seared scallops and cheesecake. Come the evening’s end, we felt well taken care of (not taken). I appreciated having a special place to go to where I can dress up and notice how dashing my husband looks when he dresses up. . . and share the night with other people who also see this as a special place. For one night I like knowing that I won’t end up sitting next to someone who is in shorts and a baseball cap. . . or with children who don’t know how to use “inside voices”. It was magical and I am already trying to think about what might qualify as a “special” occasion to justify returning to my new favorite “special occasion” restaurant.

Disappointing and over-hyped

Posted by RWP from St Louis, Missouri on 8/12/07
Old St Louis institution but time has passed it by and it's resting on its laurels. Reservation at 8:00; we arrived at 8:05; waited an hour for a table and several groups arriving later were seated before us. Even the bar staff didn't bother to offer to refresh our drinks or wonder why we'd been there so long. Finally had to ask what was going on and it seems we had been forgotten - or ignored. Obsequious apologies by the maitre d', but that lousy service colored our entire evening. Food was mediocre; my dover sole was salty although my wife's lobster was OK. Incredibly, the waiter didn't seem to know how to recommend a wine that would go with my fish. Numerous restaurants in St Louis are better than this. Tony's gets press as the most prestigious restaurant in town but, increasingly, people who live here go elsewhere.

Sad what has become of Tony's

Posted by JSExeter from Exeter, NH on 2/14/07
Tony's used to be one of America's great restaurants. Now it is a laughable anachronism. Pretentous, spotty and arrogant service. Passable food. Indifferent management/ownership. If travelling to St. Louis there are now many other superior alternatives in the city. Tony's has become a poster child for classic restaurants which have lost their edge. Truly a shame.
