Massachusetts Travel Guide

Car Travel

Public transportation can be a bit spotty in this region, with buses that don’t run on Sunday or during the evening, so you’ll almost certainly need a car. But you’ll want one anyway so you can take leisurely drives down Routes 2, 7, and 8 to see the fall foliage. Be warned that mountain roads are very winding and not for the fainthearted; if you care less about mountaintop views than you do about settled innards, skip the hairpin turn on Route 2 and approach North Adams from the south instead of the east.
