Vault Gallery

Housed inside a former bank, this small art gallery based on French salon galleries includes the vault room with the original safe door intact. While the building itself is impressive, the gallery also features artwork by owner Marilyn Kalish in a variety of media, as well as some work by other artists and a small collection of antiques.

Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum

Built in 1893, Ventfort Hall was the summer "cottage" of Sarah Morgan, the sister of financier J. P. Morgan. Lively tours offer a peek into the lifestyles of Lenox's superrich "cottage class." The museum's temporary exhibits explore the role of Lenox and the Berkshires as the era's definitive mountain retreat. Victorian high tea served during guest lectures and workshops is among the highlights.

Western Gateway Heritage State Park

The old Boston & Maine Railroad yard is the site of this park whose free museum has exhibits that trace the construction of the Hoosac Tunnel and the impact of train travel on the region. A scale model of North Adams in the 1950s is on display, and there's a short film that documents the intense labor required to construct the nearby Hoosac Tunnel; the tunnel is best viewed from a pedestrian bridge one block from the park where you can see the tracks as they disappear into the tunnel.
