3 Best Performing Arts in The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Barrington Stage Company

Fodor's choice
In the summer, this theater company keeps two stages bustling with creative activity. The Main Stage hosts major musical productions and big names, while a smaller black box theater showcases new works-in-progress. Cabaret nights and a winter 10-minute play festival round out the yearly offerings.

Berkshire Theatre Group

This theater company has presented plays since 1929. Those on the Main Stage tend to be better-known works with established actors. A smaller theater mounts more experimental works, and some festival productions, including family-friendly shows and the holiday staple "A Christmas Carol" take place at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield.

Shakespeare and Company

The works of William Shakespeare and other writers are performed between five theaters. The Tina Packer Playhouse and Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre are both indoors, so you can enjoy productions throughout much of the year. Outdoor theaters include the The New Spruce Theatre, Roman Garden Theatre, and the Rose Footprint Theatre, the latter of which reflects the dimensions of the Rose, Shakespeare's first performance space in London.
