Emily Dickinson Museum

Emily Dickinson Museum Review

The famed Amherst poet lived here her entire life (1830-86) in this brick Federal-style home. Admission is by guided tour only, and the highlight is getting to stand in the sunlit bedroom where the poet wrote many of her works. The museum is outfitted with period accoutrements, including original wall hangings and lace curtains. To say that the tour guides are knowledgeable in Dickinson's story would be a massive understatement.

Next door is The Evergreens, an imposing Italianate Victorian mansion in which Emily's brother Austin and his family resided for more than 50 years. Unlike the Dickinson homestead, which has few of the family's original possessions, the Evergreens is packed with Austin's family's heirlooms. 214 Main St., 01002. 413/253-5272.

We came to Amherst for a reunion and found ourselves with extra time on our hands, so after a light lunch at the Souperbowl in the center of town we headed to the emily Dickinson Museum since she has been a favorite poet of mine since childhood. We took the 90 minute tour called Emily Dickinson's World which explored both homes, that of the poet and her brother Austin. The guide was well honed in everything Emily. It was the best 90 minutes we ever spent in a historical site. We also took a walk to the town cemetery where Emily Dickinson, her sister Lavinia and mother and father are at rest. All in all it was a great visit. The Evergreens, brother Austin's mansion is exquisite in every way, untouched, frozen in time, is an amazing experience of 19th century life in New England.
