Smack dab on the town common of downtown Amherst, this rambling 1926 inn, owned by Amherst College, is a bit like one of your favorite, old professors: a bit tattered around the edges, somewhat old-fashioned, but endearing nonetheless. It's a favorite among visiting parents and professors who choose from a variety of rooms, from smallish doubles to larger suites, all with a mismatch of antique furniture (garnered from Amherst College) and reproductions. Avoid the garden-facing wing rooms when a wedding is going on! Pros: great location on the town common, good value. Cons: some baths are closet size; hallways in the wing section are dark and dreary; lots of wedding, school, and graduation celebrations are held here.
