William Cullen Bryant Homestead

Fodor's Review:

About 20 mi northwest of Northampton, in the scenic hills west of the Pioneer Valley, is the country estate of the 19th-century poet and author, William Cullen Bryant. Inside the Dutch Colonial 1783 mansion are furnishings and collectibles from Bryant's life, work, and travels. Outside, the wild 465-acre grounds overlooking the Westfield River valley are a great venue for bird-watching, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, hiking, and picnics.

  • Cost: Grounds free, house open by guide tours only, $5
  • Open: House late June-Columbus Day, Sat.-Mon. and holidays 1-5; Grounds daily sunrise-sunset.
