By Car
The Chamber of Commerce strongly discourages bringing cars to Nantucket. They're really not needed—unless you're planning to stay a week or more, and renting far out of town, off the bus routes. The town itself is entirely walkable, and keeping a car there is not practical; the longest you're allowed to park is ½ to 1½ hours at a time ("summer specials"—supplemental police personnel—are right on it, keeping tabs by PDA). The entire island is easily accessible by bike, taxi, or public transportation.
If you're still determined to rent a car while on Nantucket, book early—and expect to spend at least $109 a day during high season.
