This 1709 abode spent the past half-century as a restaurant-slash-rooming house, and now that the owners of 'Sconset's Summer House are running the show, it's a lot cheerier: the wood-paneled interior has been spiffed with colorful silk pillows, and the menu has morphed into sunny Mediterranean staples. Fear not, fans of the beef Wellington and breakfast popovers for which the former Woodbox was long famed: they remain on the menu -- alongside such welcome innovations such as lobster wrapped in kataif (angel-hair filo). The desserts are a Francophile's dream come true.

A lovely, romantic, wood-paneled, 299 year old restaurant in a quiet setting and my favourite on the island. I was fortunate enough to dine here last week and was the only patron for an hour. Excellent attentive service from Jake my server, fine food and a wonderful champagne and wine list. I ate the fish soup as a starter, the coq au vin for an entree as part of the prix fixe menu. They were both exellent. I thoroughly recommend this place for anyone looking to get away from the madding crowds for a romantic meal. When I return this Thursday I will be ordering the Beef Wellington!
