An 1886 grand hotel forms the core of this family-oriented complex, where nicely landscaped brick walkways lead to a half-dozen town houses and an outdoor heated pool. Rooms are decorated in a pale-pine-and-wicker motif, in a summery color scheme of white, sunny yellow, and hydrangea blue; many come with private balconies. Owner Stephen Karp installed his favorite Chinese chefs in Harbor Wok, open in season. Babysitters are on call in season, and children's programs are offered from mid-June to Labor Day. Dogs get a special welcome at the "Woof Hotel," a dozen rooms dedicated to canine comfort—with dog beds, treats, and even a "Yappy Hour" for socializing. As of this writing, a spa was being developed for the property. Pros: Child- and pet-friendly, in town, close to Children's Beach. Cons: Geared more to families than romance, large scale can mean impersonal, some rooms near busy street.
