Altar Rock Road, a dirt track about 3 mi west of the Milestone Road Rotary on Polpis Road, leads to the island's highest point, Altar Rock, from which the view is spectacular. The hill overlooks open moor and bog land -- technically called lowland heath -- which is very rare in the United States. The entire area is laced with paths leading in every direction. Don't forget to keep track of the trails you travel to find your way back.
