$$$-$$$$, Chilmark
Fodor's Review:
Exclusive and secluded, this cedar-shingle retreat on 56 acres of former farmland puts you in the heart of the rural Vineyard. The restaurant, Theo's ($$$-$$$$), is relaxed and elegant, with fresh, health-conscious food that is thoughtfully prepared. You might dine on maple-spiced duck breast with sweet-potato gnocchi, or seared sea scallops with a basil-grapefruit-tarragon beurre blanc. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, and a box lunch is available for a picnic on the beach (the inn runs a guest shuttle to Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket beaches). Rooms are sparsely but tastefully decorated with simple island-made furniture; most have glass doors that open onto terraces or private decks. There is a large parlor-library with a fireplace. Pros: Lots of privacy, many rooms have terraces with views, terrific restaurant. Cons: Not a great choice for children, a long drive from town centers, Wi-Fi in common room but not individual guest rooms.
