White with the classic black shutters of the town's historic homes and fronted by ornate columns, this appropriately named inn sits a block from the downtown harbor; it was built as the home of 19th-century whaling captain Lafayette Rowley. Today the inn's three floors are done in dark woods and bold floral wallpapers, with rugs over wood floors. Several rooms hold handmade reproduction four-poster beds. Breakfast, served in season in the brick-patio garden, includes creative muffins and breads. Pros: Staff is top-notch, super romantic, close to restaurants. Cons: You better love high-style Victoriana, not geared toward families, lots of pedestrian traffic.

We stayed at the Victorian Inn for a weekend in October. It was a wonderful and warm inn. The owners were extremely gracious and helpful. It met all of our expectations and more. Location is perfect. I highly recommend The Vic Inn!
