Chicama Vineyards

Wineries / Breweries, West Tisbury

Fodor's Review:

A rather unique island undertaking, the Chicama Vineyards is the fruit of the Mathiesen family's labors. From 3 acres of trees and rocks, George -- a broadcaster from San Francisco -- his wife, Cathy, and their six children have built a fine vineyard. They started in 1971 with 18,000 vinifera vines, and today the winery produces nearly 100,000 bottles a year from Chardonnay, Cabernet, and other European grapes. Chenin blanc, Merlot, and a cranberry dessert wine are among their 10 or more tasty varieties. A shop selling their wine, along with herbed vinegars, mustards, jellies, and other foods prepared on the premises, is open year-round.
