Most long-distance travelers visiting Cape Cod head to a major gateway, such as Boston or Providence, RI, and then rent a car to explore the region. Flying time to Boston or Providence is 1 hour from New York, 2 1/2 hours from Chicago, 6 hours from Los Angeles, and 3 1/2 hours from Dallas.
Boston's Logan Airport is one of the nation's most important domestic and international airports, with direct flights from all over North America and Europe (as well as other continents). Providence's efficient T. F. Green Airport receives very few international flights (mostly from Canada) but offers a wide range of direct domestic flights to East Coast and Midwest destinations; it serves the western United States to a lesser extent. Discount carrier Southwest also flies out of Providence, which helps keep fares down.
Another option is connecting from a major airport to Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis, which has direct service to Boston, Providence, and New York (La Guardia) as well as to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The other, Provincetown Airport, has direct flights to Boston. Flying to either of these smaller airports can be costly, especially during busy times in summer, but it can also save you plenty of time when compared with driving to the Mid, Lower, or Upper Cape from Boston or New York City. There are also numerous flights to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard from Hyannis, Boston, New Bedford, and Providence, and you can fly between Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as well.
All of the nation's major airlines -- as well as many international airlines -- serve Boston's Logan Airport, and all major national carriers serve Providence. Hyannis's Barnstable Municipal Airport is serviced by US Airways Express (with service to Boston and NYC's La Guardia), Nantucket Airlines (with service to Nantucket), Island Airlines (with service to Nantucket), and Cape Air (with service to Boston, Providence, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard); Provincetown Airport is serviced by Cape Air (with service to Boston).
