This grand 1830s inn is a short walk east of the commercial span of Main Street, near the heart of downtown—but it has a protected marsh in its backyard. Billed as the oldest continuously operating lodging establishment in Chatham, the inn is filled with antique and reproduction furniture, plus handmade quilts, braided rugs, and other homey touches. The 18 rooms and suites come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, some of them accommodating as many as six guests. Several rooms have fireplaces, wet bars, and private balconies. Breakfast, which is also available to the public by reservation, is served in a lovely dining room that also provides the setting for an informal afternoon tea with delicious sweets and treats. An intimate pub with a wood-burning fireplace has a full liquor license and is open to the public. On hot days you can cool off on the great big north-facing veranda overlooking Main Street. Pros: Fine location and an easy walk to town center, spacious rooms, many with fireplaces for chilly nights, gym privileges at local club (fee). Cons: No water views or beachfront, not for those traveling with young children.
