This 1895 sea captain's home has a prime location on Scargo Lake, with a private beach and dock. Inside, innkeepers Larry and Debbie Bain display a collection of art and antiques amid the Victorian furnishings. There's plenty of room to spread out on the big screened porch, in the sitting room or more formal living room, or in the cozy 3rd-floor reading room. If you want a lake view, choose the cozy all-blue Hydrangea Room, with a pineapple-top four-poster bed and a skylight overhead. For more space, the Captain Howe's Suite has a king-size canopy bed, plus a separate sitting room with a working fireplace that's bigger than the guest rooms at many other B&Bs. Kids 5 and up are welcome. Pros: Great freshwater lakefront location for swimming and boating, many rooms have water views, historic lodging. Cons: Rooms are accessed via steep stairs, some rooms have small shower stalls.
