Baxter Grist Mill Review

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1710 structure is the only mill on Cape Cod powered by an inside water turbine; the others use either wind or paddle wheels. The mill was converted to the indoor metal turbine in 1860 because of the pond's low water level and the damage done to the wooden paddle wheel by winter freezes. The original metal turbine is displayed on the grounds. A videotape tells the mill's history. There are no scheduled hours or tours, but feel free to walk around the grounds.
