Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve encompasses 2,500 acres of estuary and barrier beach around the bay, making it a good birding site. South Cape Beach is part of the reserve; you can lie out on the sand or join one of the interpretive walks. Flat Pond Trail runs through several different habitats, including fresh- and saltwater marshes. Washburn Island (877/422-6762 camping permit) is accessible by boat (your own) or by Saturday-morning tours (call to reserve); it offers 330 acres of pine barrens and trails, swimming, and 11 wilderness campsites (a permit is required). At the reserve headquarters, a 23-acre estate, an exhibit center includes displays about the bay's plants and animals, the Cape Cod watershed, and local Wampanoag culture. An interactive exhibit, outside on the lawn, allows you to trace the path of a raindrop; pick up a ball (the pseudo-raindrop) and follow its journey from cloud to land to river and on through the water cycle. In July and August the center has nature programs for children and families, as well as a Saturday-afternoon open house from 2 to 4 PM with family programs and a Tuesday-evening lecture-performance series (you can bring a picnic).
