Ashumet Holly and Wildlife Sanctuary

Fodor's Review:

Overseen by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Ashumet Holly and Wildlife Sanctuary is true to its name and its original plantsman, Wilfred Wheeler, with its 1,000-plus holly trees and shrubs composed of 65 American, Asian, and European varieties. Like Heritage Museums and Gardens in Sandwich, this 45-acre tract of woodland, shady groves, meadows, and hiking trails was purchased and donated by Josiah K. Lilly III to preserve local land. Grassy Pond is home to numerous turtles and frogs, and in summer 35 nesting pairs of barn swallows live in the open rafters of the barn. Maps for self-guided tours cost $1. Tours to nearby Cuttyhunk Island (on a 50-foot sailing vessel) leave Woods Hole every Sunday from mid-July to early October; trips run from 9 to 5 and cost $50.

  • Cost: $3
  • Open: Trails daily sunrise-sunset
