The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is the largest independent, private oceanographic laboratory in the world. Several buildings in the village of Woods Hole house its shore-based facilities; others are on a 200-acre campus nearby. During World War II its research focused on underwater explosives, submarine detection, and the development of antifouling paint. Today its $93 million annual budget helps to operate many laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. A graduate program is offered jointly with MIT. WHOI's research vessels roam the world's waters; its staff led the successful U.S.-French search for the Titanic (found about 400 mi off Newfoundland) in 1985.
