New Bedford's whaling tradition is commemorated in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, encompassing 13 blocks of the waterfront historic district. The park visitor center, in an 1853 Greek-revival former bank, provides maps and information about whaling-related sites. Free walking tours of the park leave from the visitor center at 10 AM and noon in July and August. You can also view an orientation film about American whaling and the New Bedford historic sites; the film is free and is shown on the hour, daily 10 to 3, at the nearby New Bedford Whaling Museum.
