The New Bedford Whaling Museum, established in 1903, is the world's largest museum devoted to the history of whaling. A highlight is the skeleton of a 66-foot blue whale, one of only three on view anywhere in the world. An interactive exhibit lets you listen to the underwater sounds of whales, dolphins, and other sea life, plus the sounds of a thunderstorm and a whale-watching boat—all as a whale might hear them. You can also peruse the collection of scrimshaw, visit exhibits on regional history, and climb aboard an 89-foot half-scale model of the 1826 whaling ship Lagoda—the world's largest ship model.
