Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History Review
For nature enthusiasts, a visit to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is a must; it's just a short drive west from the heart of Brewster along Route 6A. The spacious museum and pristine grounds include guided field walks, a shop, a natural-history library, lectures, classes, nature and marine exhibits such as a working beehive, and a pond- and sea-life room with live specimens. Walking trails wind through 80 acres of forest, marshland, and ponds, all rich in birds and other wildlife. The exhibit hall upstairs has a wall display of aerial photographs documenting the process by which the famous Chatham sandbar was split in two. The museum also has guided canoe and kayak trips from May through September and several cruises that explore Cape waterways. Onboard naturalists point out the wildlife and relay historical information about each habitat. Call for tour times and fees, and sign up as early as you can. The museum has wildlife movies and slide lectures in the auditorium on Wednesday at 7:30, from early July through August. There are children's and family activities in summer, including full- and half-day workshops and one- and two-week day camps consisting of art and nature classes for preschoolers through ninth graders.
