The 1890 French Cable Station Museum was the stateside landing point for the 3,000-mi-long transatlantic cable that originated in Brittany. Another cable laid between Orleans and New York City completed the France-New York link, and many important messages were communicated through the station. During World War I, when it was an essential connection between army headquarters in Washington and the American Expeditionary Force in France, the station was under guard by the marines. By 1959 telephone service had rendered the station obsolete, and it closed -- but the equipment is still in place.
