Mid Cape

Getting Oriented

The Mid Cape includes the towns of Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Dennis, each divided into smaller townships and villages. The town of Barnstable, for example, consists of Barnstable Village, West Barnstable, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, Osterville, Centerville, and Hyannis, with the smaller quasi villages (distinguished by their separate postal codes) of Craigville, Cummaquid, Hyannis Port, West Hyannis Port, and Wianno. Yarmouth contains Yarmouth Port, along the north shore, and the mid and south villages of West Yarmouth and South Yarmouth. The town of Dennis's villages are easy to remember: Dennis, West Dennis, South Dennis, East Dennis, and Dennisport. Route 6A winds along the north shore through tree-shaded scenic towns and village centers, and Route 28 dips south through some of the more overdeveloped parts of the Cape. Generally speaking, if you want to avoid malls, heavy traffic, and cheesy motels, stay away from Route 28 from Falmouth to Chatham.

Barnstable, Hyannis, and Environs. Like a houseful of independently minded siblings, villages within Barnstable are widely different. The dignified village of Barnstable sits along historic Route 6A. West Barnstable, Cotuit, Osterville, Hyannis Port, Cummaquid, and Wianno are filled with art galleries and fine shops. Hyannis thrives on endless amusements.

Yarmouth. Along Route 6A and branching off onto many quiet lanes leading to the bay, Yarmouth Port is all grand architecture, fine art, and antiques. The sister towns of West Yarmouth and South Yarmouth are on the south side, right in the midst of the animated, highly commercial offerings along Route 28.

Dennis. Like Yarmouth, Dennis has multiple personalities. Dennis Village and East Dennis are quiet and historic, while Dennisport, West Dennis, and South Dennis have their share of lively entertainments.
