Art's Dune Tours (Commercial and Standish Sts., Downtown Center. 508/487-1950. www.artsdunetours.com) has been taking eager passengers into the dunes of Province Lands since 1946. Bumpy but controlled rides transport you through sometimes surreal sandy vistas peppered with beach grass and along shoreline patrolled by seagulls and sandpipers. Tours are filled with lively tales, including the fascinating history of the exclusive (and reclusive) dune shacks (18 still stand today). These 1- to 1 1/2-hour tours are offered several times daily; especially intriguing are the sunset and moonlight tours. Rides coupled with clambakes or barbecues are popular; call for availability and pricing.
Harbor Tours on the Viking Princess (MacMillan Wharf, Downtown Center. 508/487-7323. www.capecodecotours.com) are given in mornings throughout the summer. These narrated excursions tell stories of shipwrecks and pirate raids and pass by Civil War forts and the Long Point Lighthouse. There are also sunset cruises, "critter cruises" with onboard naturalists, and kids-oriented "pirate fun cruises."
P-town Pedicab (508/487-0660. www.ptownpedicabs.com) provides highly enjoyable town tours in vehicles you won't find in too many places around the country. A guide pedals you and up to two more guests around town in an open-air three-wheel chariot-like cab, pointing out local sights and offering an unusual perspective on this already unusual town. The company also offers customized gallery-hopping, ghost-graveyard, shopping, and history tours. It's a memorable way to see the area.
Provincetown Trolley (508/487-9483. www.provincetowntrolley.com) offers 40-minute narrated tours of Provincetown, which leave from outside town hall every 30 minutes daily 10-4, and every hour daily 5-7 PM. The ride takes you through downtown, out to the Provincetown Monument, and by the beaches; the fare is $8.
