Fodor's Review

Built in 1806 using the design of builder and architect Asher Benjamin, this imposing United Methodist church stands, along with the Harrison Gray Otis House next door, as a reminder of the area's more fashionable days. The church was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and it was the first integrated congregation in the country, giving open seating to blacks and whites alike just before 1820. The building narrowly escaped demolition in the 1950s, when most of the West End was razed; thankfully it was saved and was named a historic landmark in 1971.
