This place has jumped to the head of the class by keeping things simple yet effective. (The litmus: local chefs gather here to wind down after work.) Try anything with the great chive mashed potatoes and don't miss the double-thick buttermilk fried pork loin. The vibe is generally more bar than restaurant, so be forewarned: it can get loud. Waits for tables can be downright impossible on weekend nights, and desserts are not served.

One of the best restaurants in Boston's South End, and one of its least pretentious. Terrifically good food, a favorite of local chefs when they get off work. Often crowded, and you may end up eating at the bar, which dominates the space. Respectable pricing and decent service. A must in this area.
