Pomodoro

Pomodoro Review

This teeny trattoria—just eight tables—is worth the wait, with excellent country Italian favorites such as rigatoni with white beans and arugula, a veal scaloppini with sweet onion balsamic glaze, and a light-but-filling zuppa di pesce. The best choice could well be the classic linguini, accompanied by a bottle of Vernaccia. Pomodoro doesn't serve dessert, but it's easy to find great espresso and pastries in the cafés on Hanover Street.

    "Extraodinarily surly" service. DITTO!!!
    Friday August 6 2010.
"5 minutes. Please wait out side". Imagine my surprise. Pomodoro's! Best of Boston, and we garnered a table. WOW! I was pumped. 5 minutes later we sat at a tiny table in the back. It was dark and I forgot my reading glasses. Not to worry, my daughter read the wine list to me. Not recognizing the chardonnays I asked the woman who sat us for help. In a stern tone, "someone will be with you". Off she scampered. A young boy appeared and offered assistance. Shortly he returned with wine and water. "would you like to order?" We were not ready but decided to share a salad while we perused the menu. He was noticeably upset. Shortly after, the lady appeared again. With hand on hip she proclaimed in a scolding voice, "there is a reservation after you and you have to order now!" My excitement turned to shock. Why didn't she tell me this in the beginning so I could have chosen whether I wanted to rush through our meal. We ordered, so not to make a fuss. My veal was tough and over-powered by the balsamic reduction. My daughter's pasta with shrimp was over salted. The shrimp was OK. We left most of it. I left the table to find the restrooms when I returned there was a square of Tiramisu in front of each of us. I'm a pastry chef, and I don't eat dessert-go figure. My daughter explained that it was on the house, everyone gets one. Hmm...I would rather have had a bit more time/better service.
The dessert was the best part of the meal.
As the lady scampered around I offered my credit card, "we only take cash. There is an ATM nextdoor." The sugar in her insincere smile would have been better served in a Cannoli!
NOW, I was not going to bring my ATM card but at the last minute I thought better. ALTHOUGH, I would have LOVED doing the dishes just to be close enough to the kitchen to give this arrogant woman a lesson in true service!!!

it was AWFUL!!!!! the waitress was incredibly rude and made racist comments to me that were so hurtful that i walked out of the restaurant crying. my date and i were there for 2.5 hours, and she asked us quite rudely to leave so that other customers could have the table. i've never been asked to leave a restaurant before, and while it's somewhat understandable since it's a small place, we paid $50 each for an entree and a shared bottle of wine and she could have asked more nicely. we left her an $18 tip, which i wish now that we hadn't. i think she overheard me complaining about having to leave. i went to use the restroom after we paid, and when i came out, she started yelling at me that "in this country and in this culture, it's considered polite manners to close the bathroom door when you're done using it." she also said more stuff to follow up on that. first off, it's not my fault that the restaurant is so tiny that i couldn't walk out of the bathroom to close the door, because the waitress was pouring wine at a table. secondly, why does she have to assume that because i have an asian face, that i'm not part of this country and american culture? i've never had someone make judgments on me because of my ethnicity, and so yes, i walked out of pomodoro in tears. it turned out that the woman is also the owner, so there isn't really anyone i can complain to.

There are better red sauce spots in the North End (Pagliuca's, Maurizio's, and Saraceno's, for three) but this is a good middle of the road option here. Tiny space, one of the smallest in the neighborhood. Service can range from very good to poor. No bathrooms.
