Chef-owner Lydia Shire gave this old Boston spot a much-needed update when she took the reins in 2001. The ornate woodwork gleams again, and the once-stodgy kitchen is turning out classics with flair—and a slightly lighter touch. Traditionalists needn't worry, though; many favorites remain on the menu, including Shire's signature JFK lobster stew, Indian pudding, which has never been better, and clams casino. There is valet parking after 6 PM.

A long-time, somewhat stuffy high end restaurant and a favorite Boston Brahmin haunt, essentially serves very upscale classics. Has arguably the best lobster stew/bisque and baked Alaska locally. Gorgeously ornate place, fine food and excellent service. Dress up and make reservations.
