Witty and stylish, without going overboard, this modern hotel (formerly the Hotel at MIT) riffs on its high-tech Cambridge location. Lobby art on loan from MIT is interactive and high tech, and guests get free access to the MIT museum. Rooms, recently refurbished, are Euro-style residential, with platform beds, flat-screen TVs, and ergonomically designed furniture. In the lobby and the large, open-kitchen restaurant, cool metal highlights are mixed with burnished maple, redwood, and oak. It's a hub for techie business travelers and a real bargain for weekend vacationers. Pros: tech-savvy rooms and surroundings, fitness center is open 24 hours, great off-season, Internet rates. Cons: a bit out of the way, with a 10-minute or so walk to the T.

What can you say about a place that has blankets in rooms with formulas "written" across them as a print? Geek chic abounds in this service-oriented icon on MIT's campus. Rooms on the 8th floor have small refrigerators, and coincidentally there is a grocery store very close to the hotel. Personal service is stressed and this hotel delivers wonderfully on that front. Not a surprise that this gem on the MIT campus is not only a very luxe place, but is also a "green" hotel with an environmental commitment to conserving resources, but that's fine, guests won't feel their missing out on anything. Room service is cheerful and prompt, and the food is actually still hot from the kitchen, which to a frequent traveler, is something of a lovely novelty.
