Although it's housed in a an old (1903) beaux arts building, this boutique hotel is anything but stodgy. The tiny lobby is all black lacquer with bold splashes of red, brightened with recessed lighting and abstract art. Even the cage elevator is paneled in red leather. Just when you're thinking, "Hmm," you enter a guest room and go, "Ahh!" Rooms are done up in soothing-but-manly shades of cinnamon, taupe, and black, and each has a canopy bed, a gas fireplace, and surround-sound stereo. Fab little touches abound, like bath amenities from Newbury Street's Fresh, and little flat-screen TVs in the bathroom, plus huge mirrors and heated towel bars. A nearby health club is available to hotel guests, and the hotel's restaurant, the Federalist, is a favorite for fine dining. Tip: This is the place to be for Boston's Harborfest (July 4th) celebration, when guests can watch fireworks from the roof deck (open from Memorial Day to Labor Day). Pros: Courtesy car service, friendly concierge, you can charge your laptop in your in-room safe. Cons: Mattresses are just average.

My husband and I stayed at XV Beacon for New Year's Eve. It did not disappoint! Our room was spacious and beautifully appointed. I believe all rooms in this hotel have a fireplace which is helpful considering the cold winter nights in Boston. Although the hotel was near full capacity, it felt as though we were the only couple staying at the hotel. The attentiveness of the staff helped create this feel. If you are looking for a boutique hotel with unique touches, this hotel is for you. We will definately stay there again.

In 2007 XV is not hapening: I was really looking forward to staying at XV Beacon. I have heard wonderful references and the hotel brags about catering to even the most particular guest.
