Boston's most buzz-worthy hotel, bar none, is the Liberty, set in the old (19th century) Charles Street Jail. The jail puns eventually wear thin—the bar is called "Alibi," a restaurant is "Clink," and so on—but you can't deny the cool factor of this unique luxury hotel. Recent guests have included Lindsay Lohan (whose DUI mug shot hangs in the bar) and Bruce Willis. Jailhouse rock (vis-à-vis granite) meets modern style here, where they've incorporated some of the jail's features into the $150 million re-do, including the trademark windows, catwalks, and even jail cells. This circa 1851 National Historic Landmark building sits at the foot of Beacon Hill, close to boutiques and restaurants. A soaring lobby of exposed brick leads to 18 guest rooms (in the main building), while an adjacent 16-story tower houses 280 more rooms with expansive views of the city. Aside from the solitary sign you hang from your door when you wish to be alone, there's nothing about the rooms that suggest confinement. Small but freshly modern, they provide luxe linens, flat-panel TVs and Wi-Fi. Some offer cool views of the Charles River. Don't expect a quiet getaway here—the Alibi bar (the former drunk tank) draws lines to get in—so just go with it, and join the party. (Don't miss the fried mac-and-cheese balls at Clink.) Pros: great in-house restaurant, Scampo; lively nightlife; Beacon Hill location. Cons: some say HVAC system is noisy, lively nightlife, service has a few bugs to work out.

We started our honeymoon at the Liberty Hotel and then went on to Bermuda. We missed the luxury of the Liberty as soon as we arrived in Bermuda! Our room was amazing with spectacular views of Boston, all of the staff, particularly the concierge were extremely helpful and accommodating, and the preservation of some of the jail's features gave the hotel a fresh, original feel. We wish the Liberty had a pool (they have a beautiful patio) and that the use of their computers (we did not bring a laptop) in the business center was free--then it would truly be perfect.
