Jamaica Plain's postage stamp–size, candlelit boîte (there's a sister restaurant in Cambridge) is an enchanting mix of Gallic elegance and chummy neighborhood revelry–both in the atmosphere and the food. Simple but high-quality dishes such as hanger steak with tomato-pepper relish and Sicilian-style fish stew—followed by a carefully chosen "one perfect cheese" plate—seamlessly seal the deal. The $48 tasting menu, $35 if you're a vegetarian or vegan (the latter requires 24-hour advance notice), makes ordering easy. Just be prepared to wait it out for a table, or reserve weeks in advance online, as phones are generally staffed by a recording. The stylish, laid-back bar, where you can enjoy dinner or bar bites, is warmly appointed with reclaimed wood and exposed brick.

A terrifically excellent fine dining spot, the best Jamaica Plain has to offer, with surprisingly reasonable prices given the quality and ambition of the cooking. Tiny if appealing space, though getting to the bathroom can be an adventure. Good service too. An absolute must.
