Fodor's Review

This Berkshire cottage once owned by New York lawyer Joseph Choate, ambassador to Great Britain during President William McKinley's administration, provides a glimpse into the gracious living of the Gilded Age. The 44-room gabled mansion, designed by Stanford White in 1886, sits atop Prospect Hill. Its many original furnishings and art span three centuries; the collection of Chinese porcelain is also noteworthy. The meticulously kept 8 acres of formal gardens designed by Fletcher Steele are worth the visit.
